Lesson 1- Starting Out: Using the Wizard
Starting-
Follow through these steps by opening a Publisher document
now.
When
entering the Publisher program, use the Wizard to make
your initial choices for design and layout. If the Wizard
does not automatically come up, click on the "Show
Wizard" button (#1) on the bottom right corner
of the screen; this will bring the Wizard up.
Generally, I choose to use the "Newsletters"
layout (#2). The various styles are shown on the
right. Choose one that suits your taste.
- A word of caution -- some styles take an large amount
of disk space and, coupled with any graphics that are
used, will slow print time down.
- To manually set up the document and not use the Wizard,
double click on the layout choice; this will take you
directly into Publisher. The wizard will be on the left,
and the first page of your document will be on the right.
- Using the Wizard, to modify the style design, color
scheme, and other elements of the document at this time,
or you can work on these at a later time by clicking
on the "Show Wizard" button on the lower right
side.
Click once on your layout choice and then click on "Start
Wizard."
The
Wizard will ask if you want to enter your personal information.
Select "ok" to bring up the "Personal
Information" screen and enter as much information
as possible. Doing this will automatically enter this
information into your document. Click "ok"
when you are done.
On
the bottom left side are the "Back" and "Next"
keys. Choose the color scheme by clicking on it. When
you are done choosing colors, click on "Next."
- The next screen sets up the number of columns on each
page of the document. Consider making full pages of
text in three columns and short articles in one column.
This can also be modified at a later time.
- While there are other options, the remaining ones
have little to do with a syllabus.
- Choose "Finish" and move into the actual
document.
The Wizard will remain on the left. You can close it
by clicking on the "Hide Wizard" box in the
lower left corner.
If
you want to change the layout, design, color scheme, or
any other aspect of the template that you are using, open
the Wizard by clicking on "Show Wizard." Using
the section at the top (#4), click on any of the
major portions of the template to make any changes (Fig.
B).
If you are printing the syllabus in black and white,
avoid using bright or fluorescent colors because they
will print out too lightly. Try setting up the document
in a combination of dark and light colors, like the example
shown at the beginning of the lesson.
Read through the template document to get familiar with
what to place throughout the document. Quotes, captions,
as well as graphics, tables, and calendars, can all be
added or modified.
The template will automatically set up four pages for
the document. Each page will have a format that will vary
the look of the document. You can duplicate, modify, or
delete the pages, or you can change the look of the pages
by adding color, changing or adding shapes and colors,
adding Clip Art and pictures, and/or modifying the template.
Play with the program; I am a firm believer in the adage:
the worst you can do to the program is perform an "Illegal
Operation" and have it shut down. Finally, make sure
to save your document frequently.
